Tomorrow, June 9th, there will be the second Yarn Bombing Day. An annual appointment where people and knitters from all over the world can celebrate their love for yarn and crochet and have the chance to attempt a yarn bomb on the same day.
This initiative has been created to prove that knitting isn’t just for grandmothers and counterculture isn’t just for young punks.
A little bit of Yarn Bombing history: the start of this movement has been attributed to Magda Sayeg, 37, from Houston, who says she first got the idea in 2005 when she covered the door handle of her boutique with a custom made cozy. Then, thanks to Lauren O’Farrell, Yarn Bombing moved to the ‘stitched story concept’ which uses handmade amigurumi creatures, characters and items to tell a narrative or show a theme.
