These times that have obliged us to limit and sometimes to cancel trips and movements, reminded me of a famous sentence by Proust. It more or less sounds like this: travelling doesn’t mean looking for new places but having new eyes.
In fact if the lockdown has brought about a positive thing, it is the discovery of the infinitely close. I would like to say we have to look for the macrocosm in the microcosm, of the beauty of country paths and lanscapes, parks and the unknown narrow streets we have never before explored, even though they are just a few kilometers from home.
In Alcântara station in Lisbon subway, there is a wall painting with the opening verse of a Pessoa poem: “Afinal, a melhor maneira de viajar é sentir.”(At the end, the best way to travel is to feel). The photo of this wall painting opens and introduces Positive attitude- the fourth theme of Essential, the Feel the Yarn magazine for fall/winter 2022- that is a story that speaks about optimism, and intense, vibrant sunny tones.
In short, Pessoa says the same of Proust, both suggest that travelling is possible even without moving physically, getting close to reality with new eyes open to the marvels of daily life. It sounds like a good advice and a positive habit, even now that the world is coming back to being close and accessible.
